Álvaro Siza

In this class we analyzed the work and methods of Portuguese architect, Álvaro Siza. After studying his practices and methodologies, we did a series of explorations through diagraming and sketching. The first project was to take a project by Siza himself and break it down to show his different working methods and how they relate to his overall design thesis. The next iteration was to take a project by another Portuguese architect and analyze how Siza’s ideas translate into the designers that follow after him. The final board was to take the studio project we were doing that semester and find connections to his thesis and methodologies in our own. The projects I chose were the Chiado neighborhood restoration by Álvaro Siza, the Pocinho Center for High Performance Rowing by Álvaro Andrade, and my own studio project designing a theater in the Fenway neighborhood in Boston.
