The project for my Design as Research class aimed to improve our understanding of the design process by researching, documenting, and analyzing an existing building by a notable architect in the Boston area. The building I chose was the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum by Isabella Stewart Gardner with a new addition by Renzo Piano. We began by doing mapping studies and historic research. This work was followed by the development of massing models that we analyzed through various architectural properties. From the massing model, we honed in on the detail of the building through aperture and spatial division and then finally in tectonic detail on a particular aspect of the building.
